Fishing Spots

Inshore and Offshore

The Jersey shore consists of sandy beaches with many inlets leading to tidal waterways. Rock jetties separate the beaches. These jetties attract a diverse assortment of marine life and prove to be excellent fishing locations. The jetties provide a home and a feeding ground for many different species of fish. The tidal waterways, i.e. rivers, creeks and marshland, also provide good fishing spots. Towards the end of summer, many larger fish such as fluke, flounder and snappers (immature bluefish) make their way into the rivers and tidal creeks. I am fortunate enough to live on one such tidal creek so I have the privilege to step outside and take a short walk onto my dock to go fishing. These rivers and estuaries are excellent spots to teach kids the little intricacies of saltwater fishing. If you have a large enough boat to travel several miles out into the ocean, there are many wrecks, both man made and for the unfortunate ships that sunk, weather created ones. Wreck fishing can be some of the best fishing you will ever partake in. It is easiest to take a big party boat out to the wrecks. It cuts down on the stress and frustration of having to organize a boat trip. The wrecks provide for the most diverse collection of fish anywhere off the Jersey coast. Also located miles offshore are many canyons and several different mud flats. This is where most of the tuna and other big game are caught.

The map on the right shows a few coastal towns in New Jersey. Click on them to check up on the tide changes and local fishing reports, i.e. Point Pleasant, Barnegat Light, Atlantic Highlands and Cape May.
